PORT-AU-PRINCE -- Spain's deputy prime minister has pledged $100 million to help revitalize agriculture in Haiti and rebuild roads and schools.
María Teresa Fernández de la Vega says the Spanish government will provide the aid from 2009 to 2012.
Fernández spoke Saturday at a news conference and urged Haiti to improve its security so Spain could continue investing in the Caribbean nation.
April food riots across the Caribbean nation left at least six Haitians and a U.N. peacekeeper dead. They also triggered an outpouring of international pledges in food and agricultural aid, though only a small fraction of the food has been delivered.
